Week 1 of the renovation was great fun, there is something very relieving about ripping out and getting rid of all the ugliness and letting lose a bit! The skip arrived and I was ready to fill it! The agenda was as follows:
1. Have the damp treated in the living room and kitchen
2. Finish ripping up the carpet and flooring
3. Remove kitchen units and tiles ready for the builders to move in
4. Remove the wall cladding (at which point it was revealed that everywhere would need plastering!)
5. Remove wallpaper, which again revealed that the old lathe and plaster was clinging on to dear life underneath with just the paper holding it together. So another expense to add to the list!
Week one was when it became apparent that my rather small budget of £10-15k was not going to cut it. The scope of works originally handed to the builders was growing by the minute. Originally the plan was just to have them change the kitchen and and the bathroom, whilst I got on with the decorating and gutting the place. This then changed to:
Full re-wiring, as I also discovered half the sockets didn't actually work and the wiring so dangerously old.
Change of heating system and boiler
Plastering all over and a whole new wall between the bedrooms
New ceiling in the kitchen
New roof over the old side extensions
New guttering
Other then that it was all in my capable hands!
